Born 1960 in Fürstenwalde, Germany; study of physics at the
Humboldt University in Berlin from 1981 until 1986; 1986 diploma; 1988 Ph.D.;
1988 - 1991 researcher at the Zentralinstitut für Physikalische Chemie in
Berlin; 1991 - 1998 researcher at the Zentrum für heterogene Katalyse and
Institut für Angewandte Chemie in Berlin-Adlershof; 1998 - 1999 visiting
researcher at University of California, Santa Barbara; 1999 habilitation at the
Freie Universität Berlin; since 1999 group leader at the Max-Planck-Institut
für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim /Ruhr (Germany); Member of the International Max Planck Research School "SurMat" (Düsseldorf) and of the NanoEnergieTechnikZentrum “NETZ” (Duisburg) |

Opals are not only beautiful gemstones, they also have fundamental significance as prototypes for photonic crystals. As described e.g. in our recent review they may lead to new photonic and photocatalytic materials. |
